Golf: Unheralded American Andrew Landry created history when the weather-delayed US Open resumed at Oakmont yesterday. Landry was facing a birdie putt on the ninth, his final hole, when play was abandoned for the day on Thursday after numerous thunderstorms dumped more than an inch of rain on the course. And the world number 624 calmly holed out from 10 feet to complete a four-under-par 66 for the lowest first-round score in nine US Opens at Oakmont, beating the previous best of 67 by Ben Hogan in 1953 and Gary Player in 1973.

Basket, NBA finals: Cleveland Cavaliers took another step in their historic comeback attempt with a 115-101 win over Golden State Warriors yesterday to force a once-unthinkable decisive seventh game to the NBA Finals. The LeBron James-led Cavaliers, one victory away from becoming the first team to win an NBA championship after falling behind 3-1 in the Finals, will now head to Oakland for tomorrow night’s winner-take-all showdown riding a wave of momentum. “It’s two of the greatest words in the world, and that’s ‘Game Seven,’ so I’ll play it anywhere,” James told reporters when asked about hitting the road for the decider.

Le Mans 24 hours: Champions Porsche will start this weekend’s Le Mans 24 Hours sportscar race on pole position for the second year running after a rain-hit qualifying session at the Sarthe circuit. Swiss driver Neel Jani, in the number two Porsche 919 Hybrid he shares with France’s Romain Dumas and Germany’s Marc Lieb, set the fastest time of three minutes 19.733 seconds in Wednesday’s dry session. The trio also took pole last year in a race won by Germany’s Nico Hulkenberg, New Zealander Earl Bamber and Britain’s Nick Tandy.

Motor Racing: Daniel Ricciardo is set to stay with Red Bull to the end of 2018 after the Australian said the Formula One team looked the best place to be and he hoped to fight for the title next season. “It’s always been pretty discreet,” the 26-year-old told reporters when asked at the European Grand Prix about his contract and recent comments from team bosses that he was committed long term. “Helmut Marko made a few comments perhaps... it’s good. Obviously it means he likes me. It’s hard to tell some days but I honestly think the team is very happy with the line-up they’ve got at the moment. I’d say it’s pretty stable.”
