Russia wants to identify sectors in which it can collaborate with Malta and seek new opportunities, Russian Minister for Economic Development told Prime Minister Joseph Muscat today.

During a meeting in St Petersburg, Dr Muscat said relations between Malta and Russia had not developed in the same way as others under this administration.

Relations with China, for example, had been strengthened substantially - so Russia’s interest to strengthen commercial relations with Malta made more sense.

He noted that the talks which had taken place between European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker and Russian President Vladimir Putin had sent an important message that the climate had changed to a fairer one.

Although Europe was still bound to the Minsk agreement, it was open to more talks with Russia.
