The hacker-activist group known as Anonymous has hacked into dozens of pro-Isis Twitter accounts and infused them with gay pride images as well as pornography in response to the Orlando mass shooting.

Profile pictures of Isis supporters have been changed to images containing slogans like 'I'm gay and proud' and their cover photos replaced by canoodling semi-naked men.

Omar Mateen, who was killed by police after a three-hour standoff at the LGBT nightclub on Sunday, called 911 during his shooting spree to profess allegiance to various militant Islamist groups, though many reports said his decision to kill people inside a gay club showed ulterior motives.

"I did it for the lives lost in Orlando,” the hacker, who uses the online moniker WauchulaGhost, told Newsweek.

Hackers are exploring a number of ways to fight back against Isis, which uses social media to spread propaganda. Anonymous claimed to have hacked into about 1,500 pro-Isis and posted pornographic material. Anonymous also frequently tweets the pro-Isis accounts' IP addresses, which included users in Turkey, the UK, Iraq, Jordan, Oman and elsewhere.

Opponents fighting the radical Islamic group have been creating fake versions of its apps and tricking members into downloading them, according to an intelligence researcher.

Isis has used social media platforms like Twitter as a tool for recruitment and to spread propaganda. Twitter claims to have shut down more than 125,000 accounts promoting extremism since 2015.
