The Planning Board today refused planning permission for the construction of an extension to an existing sports and recreational facility situated within an ODZ scheduled area ‘Class-A Site of Archaeological Importance’ in the vicinity of the Ggantija Temples in Xaghra.

The application sought planning permission to construct a built structure that would accommodate public toilets, a nursery club house, a kiosk and a store and an external area reserved for tables and chairs.

The board cited that the application ran counter to thematic rural objectives of the SPED and the local plan policies for the area.

The board also refused two separate planning applications for the construction of a 20m2 kiosk outside the Spinola Gardens in St Julians.

It agreed with the Planning Directorate’s recommendation that the proposed development ran counter to the Development Control Guidance for kiosks.

Additionally, the development did not receive the endorsement of the Malta Tourism Authority and the Environmental Health Directorate.
