Did you serve in the Royal Air Force in the Second World War, or maybe you know of someone who did – your dad, grandfather or uncle?

If the answer is yes, you can help a British RAF veteran who is coming to Malta next week to interview people for a new digital archive capturing the memories of those who served in the RAF during the war.

“We are trying to track down the surviving Maltese servicemen who courageously fought for the RAF International Bomber Command during World War II, so that their stories can be captured for coming generations,” Christopher Brockbank, who works with the International Bomber Command Digital Archive, told this newspaper.

Mr Brockbank, whose father served as a Medical Officer with 213 squadron in the desert, joined the RAF in 1959.

We believe there may still be living Maltese people who joined the RAF as a means of paying back the Axis powers for the wilful death and destruction in Malta

He is now interviewing Second World War veterans in the UK for the International Bomber Command Centre at Lincoln, which hosts a memorial spire, and he would like to do the same in Malta. The interviews from around the world will be accessible to the public when an Interpretation Centre opens in Lincoln in 2017.

“RAF personnel travelled to the UK from all over the Commonwealth. We know the Maltese were part of the International Bomber Command – but the question is: who were they, and what was their story?

“British people are very proud of the Maltese people’s amazing endurance in the face of merciless airborne assaults on the islands by a cruel enemy. We believe there may still be living Maltese people who joined the RAF as a means of paying back the Axis powers for the wilful death and destruction in Malta.”

Mr Brockbank is also interested in hearing from the relatives of veterans who have passed away who may be able to recall their war stories. He will be available for interviews from June 21 to 24. Anyone interested can contact the RAF Association Secretary in Malta, Major Tony Abela, by email on rafa.maltagc@gmail.com or 2167 7061.
