The launch of this year’s Cawnpore Cup was held earlier this week in the presence of President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca and Malta Polo Club officials and players at the San Anton Palace, in Attard.

The Cawnpore Cup is the ultimate trophy for polo players on our shores. The 2016 contest will be played on Saturday (start 18.00) where Team Cono Sur will be clashing against Team MIA.

The two sides are composed of some of the most experience players at Marsa.

Team Cono Sur is made up of Desmond Mizzi, Martin Arrigo, Jeremy Besancon and Matthew Brincat, while Team MIA includes Julian Mamo, Karl Galea, Chris Delia and Alfie Manduca.

The silver trophy was first played for in 1901 and was passed on to the Malta Polo Club in 1947 by Lord Louis Mountbatten, who was a passionate polo player and a one-time president of the club.

Lord Mountbatten introduced several Maltese players to the sport during his time, most notably the famous Maltese Cats team who won the Cawnpore Cup seven years in a row.

Traditionally played for by the eight highest handicapped members at the Marsa club, which was founded in 1868, the Cawnpore Cup is fiercely contested each year and next Saturday’s match will be no exception.

The event is sponsored by Domain Group, Red October, MIA and JPA.

On Saturday, spectators are invited to follow proceedings from the club house and Chukkas Restaurant following which there will be the presentation of the cup by President Coleiro Preca.
