Women continue to be objectified and over-sexualised in adverts and posts on social media, the National Commission for the Promotion of Equality has said.

The NCPE said that it had received "a number" of objections from the public in recent months about posts depicting women in an over-sexualised manner and reinforcing gender stereotypes.

It said such posts "reinforces the stereotype that a woman’s value is determined by her physical appearance and that woman’s primary role is that of pleasing men."

"This correlates with unequal relations in society and has a direct adverse impact on women’s equal participation in all spheres of life as well as sexual harassment," NCPE said.

An NCPE spokesperson declined to provide any information about which adverts or posts had generated public complaints, citing "confidentiality".
