The first edition of the Valletta Pageant of the Seas was held this evening in Grand Harbour, presenting a spectacular show to mark the 450th anniversary of the founding of the capital.

The event, organised by the Valletta 2018 Foundation, included a swim by a large number of people from Fort St Angelo to Valletta to recall Great Siege hero Toni Bajjada, power boat and rowing boat races, a parade of carnival floats on barges and a 'race' by makeshift home-made boats which could not use sail or electrical power.

Most of the entrants for the 'race' had crews using bicycle-style pedals to power large pedals on either side of their boats. Perhaps the most eye-catching was a converted bath tub, with floats on either end and pedals on either side.

The pageant - watched by thousands of people in Valletta and the Three Cities - ended with a fireworks display.
