A Sudanese migrant yesterday walked into a police station and admitted he had entered the country illegally.

Montela Ibrahim Mammay, 34, this morning pleaded guilty to having entered Malta illegally after having left it using irregular means to travel to Sicily.

Mr Mammay, who has been in Malta since 2006, had travelled to Sicily earlier this year to find a job.

Having failed in his quest, he returned to Malta to try to find employment here. He decided to inform the authorities of his irregular travels to regularise his status in Malta.

Magistrate Neville Camilleri gave him a six-month prison sentence, suspended for one year.

In another case, a Libyan admitted handling two passports which were not his own and attempting to pass them on to third parties.

Waidi Salih Jumaa Omran, 28, was given a six-month jail term suspended for one year after he admitted to being in possession of official documents which were not his own.

The prosecution and defence both suggested he should not be given an effective prison term as this was his first offence.
