Last month, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake rocked the Sandwich Islands, off the coast of Argentina in the South Atlantic. At the location, the South American plate is converging and sliding underneath the Sandwich and Scotia Sea plates at a rate of about 67mm per year. No damage was reported on the small territory as there were no people living within 100km of the epicentre. Two other earthquakes, of magnitude 6.9 and 6.7 respectively, also struck Ecuador’s coast on May 18, leading to one death and further damage to the infrastructure that had been already damaged by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that hit the same region in April, killing over 650 people. No earthquakes were recorded last month close the Maltese islands.
