Sunday is Ladies’ Day at the Marsa Racetrack and all women will be granted free admission, the Malta Racing Club (MRC) said.

On this occasion, the MRC will be hosting two international races for women drivers from 11 European countries, including Malta.

“Harness racing in Malta is still a male-dominated sport, even though in Europe, ladies’ races are held on a regular basis, including international meeting,” the MRC said.

“This will be the fourth time for Malta to host such an event after 2011, 2012 and 2014, and the meetings have always been a great success.”

Foreign drivers from Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden have registered for next Sunday’s race at Marsa.

They will be joined by Maltese participant Laura Cunningham who is a seasoned driver at the racetrack and has considerable experience in the sport having represented our country in 13 meetings held in Sweden, Estonia, Denmark, the Netherlands, Finland and Norway.

The 12 drivers will compete in two races (for Silver and Bronze Class trotters) over a distance of 2,140 metres.

The winning owner and driver will be presented with a commemorative trophy and a blanket for the horse.

The Sette Giugno Cup, featuring 10 horses from the Premier category, is also scheduled for Sunday. The race is sponsored by Chukkas Restaurant.

The MRC said Sunday’s event would not have been possible without the financial support of SportMalta, who are also helping in the organisation, as well as all the owners who enrolled their horses for the international races.
