A centre for social development is expected to be up and running in Hamrun by the second half of 2017, Social Solidarity Minister Michael Farrugia announced this morning.

The idea was conceived by the Hamrun council around two years ago, Dr Farrugia told a news conference.

The centre will host a social security office, a centre for social development for the region, and a night shelter for the elderly.

The project will include the embellishment of the area in front of the council offices.

Permits for the project which is expected to cost over €300,000 were obtained recently from the planning authority.
