Gozo general hospital is to receive management consultancy advice from Harvard University, Health Minister Chris Fearne said today.

The Ivy League Boston-based college will be advising the hospital on hospital management, employee training and the use of medical equipment. No further details were given.

Dr Fearne said that he would be flying to Boston this week to finalise the agreement. The aim, the minister said, was to create a hospital better than Mater Dei.

Gozo general hospital is part of a €200 million private-public partnership involving Vitalis Global Healthcare Group, which is believed to have signed a 30-year contract to run the hospital.

Dr Fearne boasted that the Gozo hospital revamp would increase its bed capacity to 450 beds, up from the 291 it currently has. Of those, 100 would be dedicated to medical tourists. The hospital will also include a campus run by the UK-based Barts medical school, as well as a simulation centre for use in medical training.
