I refer to the article “Higher secondary open day turned into ‘a market of academic subjects’, says MUT” that appeared online.

As head of the higher secondary, I wish to clarify a number of points which may be misleading:

The open day’s aim was to act as a window into the school for prospective students to get a taste of the environment.

The allegation that this had been turned into a ‘market’ of academic subjects diverges from the positive intent and work done by teachers and departments alike to promote the school.

No imposition has been made by myself.

In fact, in light of feedback received from some members of staff and the MUT, this year’s open day has been cancelled.

This will allow the school community to further reflect and discuss the matter, giving voice also to those who were very much in favour of this event.

The claim that myself, or any member of the senior management, “ignored” the direction from the DG DES is a complete fabrication as there has been constant communication with the central authorities since the issue was brought to my attention.

Similarly, the claim that I am abusing my position by asking for a withdrawal of a teacher’s warrant is incorrect.

The higher secondary has achieved good performances in the past years and holds a remarkable record in results.

My primary role as a head is to help staff and students alike by enabling a positive environment which serves the community and the further development of our youths, both in terms of values and in their academic results.

Editorial note: The item in question was based on a statement issued by the Malta Union of Teachers.
