Arsenal finished the English Premier League season just ended in second place and that meant the Gunners had pipped London rivals Tottenham Hotspur for the 22nd successive year in the top flight.

This was also Arsenal’s 96th consecutive season in the top flight of English football.

The north Londoners, however, have blown it yet again. With the big spenders failing, this should have been their time to shine but Leicester City had other ideas.

Arsene Wenger’s final season of his contract now looms and there is a clear sense that this is now the last chance for him to end his Arsenal tenure on a high.

The pressure was on after their stuttering start to the season, but Arsenal enjoyed their best period of the campaign before Christmas, winning 11 out of 14 league games, including meetings with Leicester, Manchester United and Manchester City.

In the New Year, the Gunners were two points above Leicester at the top of the table. With Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool all struggling Wenger’s men became title favourites, but their challenge faded rapidly amid mounting injuries and poor form.

This has been a sad year for Aston Villa as the Midlands side will play in second tier next season.

Aston Villa’s dreadful campaign has seen them earn a place among the unfortunate teams with the lowest points totals ever in the Premier League era.

Three wins all season and three different managers in charge are an indication of the turmoil Villa had experienced in 2015-16.

One had to feel sorry for Arsenal in the Champions League, facing Barcelona and an exit in the first round knockout of the competition.

The Gunners were favourites for the FA Cup after winning the title in the previous two years. Yet, Watford shocked them at the Emirates Stadium – 2-1 in the quarter-finals.

In the League Cup, Sheffield Wednesday beat a second-string Arsenal team 3-0 at Hillsborough in the fourth round.

Villa succumbed to Man. City 4-0 at home in round four of the FA Cup and Southampton prevailed at the same stage in the League Cup, winning 2-1 at Villa Park.
