It is indeed ironic to read Clifford John Williams’ letter (May 24) about hunting offences. Following a spring hunting season devoid of gory pictures of dead birds, complaints, and the likes of  CABS noting a “significant change” due to the practical disappearance of illegalities, he seems unconvinced. After having had one of the poorest hunting seasons, he claims to have heard “intermittent” shots from January 31 to date when most hunters have not even fired a shot.

I wish to remind him that there are 10 outdoor shooting ranges on the Maltese islands, some of which have two and even three ranges within their complex, so he must be counting target practice shots, especially since, between February 1 and April 16, the hunting season was closed.

The scarcity of similar complaint letters in the media makes his very peculiar. Not only are hunters in his sights but so are politicians, the police and the government. It seems he has an axe to grind with practically everyone. Indeed, he seems to have a serious problem about himself since life goes on for all the rest and his concerns on hunting are no common factor.

Clearly, time-wasters that “have little faith in the police” and “have not reported each incident” have only themselves to blame.

CABS, Birdlife Malta, hunters and the public have availed themselves of the excellent work offered by the ALE to the point where those being most perturbed by illegalities (CABS), have stated that “we could hardly imagine such circumstances when starting our spring bird protection camps on Malta just nine years ago”.

How much better can it get were it not for the likes of Williams that persist with blabbering and achieve absolutely nothing?
