Recently, I came across an excellent reason to both support and purchase local produce: ketchup imported by a Maltese company from Turkey. The list of contents read as follows: 90 per cent water and just three per cent tomato concentrate.

Yes, three per cent was clearly stated on the label, plus the very controversial artificial sweetener aspartame. In contrast, locally-produced Gozitan tomato ketchup has an estimated tomato content of at least 70 per cent with little or no water. One very good reason to buy locally-produced products.

For the sake of accuracy, I must add that the Turkish product was simply called ketchup and not tomato ketchup, although packaged in a red bottle. Perhaps this imported product would better be labelled as tomato-flavoured water.
