Manchester United have appointed Jose Mourinho as their new manager, according to reports.

Sky Sports News reported at around 6.20pm that Mourinho, who had been pictured earlier in the day leaving and then returning to his London home dressed in a suit, had signed a contract with United to succeed Louis van Gaal.

But no announcement has been forthcoming from the club, and Press Association Sport has been told the deal is not yet complete.

Since Van Gaal was sacked earlier this week, it has looked very much a case of when rather than if Mourinho would be confirmed as United boss.

Talks have been ongoing between Mourinho's agent Jorge Mendes and United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward after they met in London on Tuesday.

That was a day after United announced they had parted company with Van Gaal, who guided the Red Devils to an FA Cup triumph last weekend but had a generally disappointing two-year tenure.

The club will play Europa League rather than Champions League football next season after finishing the 2015-16 Premier League season in fifth place.

It is expected Mourinho will oversee a major overhaul of the playing staff as he attempts to revive United's fortunes - and Zlatan Ibrahimovic on Thursday signalled him moving to United could be on the cards.

The Sweden striker, who is leaving Paris St Germain this summer, has been strongly linked with United.

And at a press conference in Sweden streamed on Expressen.se on Thursday, he confirmed he has had ''concrete offers'' from Premier League clubs.

He did not mention United specifically in that context, but spoke of his admiration for and ''great relationship'' with his former boss Mourinho.

And when asked if there had been an offer from the Old Trafford outfit, Ibrahimovic paused for several seconds with a smile on his face, before saying: ''Let's see what happens.''

Asked if he has spoken to Mourinho in the past week, the 34-year-old frontman said: ''I have spoken with him every day since I left Inter Milan (where they worked together in 2008-09).

''I have a great relationship with Mourinho and we are in contact, but not in the last weeks - we have been talking for many years.''

Regarding the prospect of Mourinho taking over at United, Ibrahimovic said: ''I think it is a great move - if you want action you bring Mourinho.

''I believe he is the man to take them back to the top.

''Wherever he went he has won. He knows what he is doing. If you want to win, you bring Mourinho.

''I had a fantastic time with him when I was working with him - so working again with him...?

''When I left Inter I said we had had a short time together but a great time. If we will work together again, I don't know. Let's see how things play out.

''I don't give guarantees - but there are concrete offers from the Premier League, so let's see what happens.''

It was also put to Ibrahimovic there have been questions over whether he would be suited to the Premier League, given his age.

He replied: ''I am only warming up. I had a fantastic season and proved age is just a number.

''Everything is in your head - whatever you want to do, you will do it.

''If I want to make it, I will make it. I am not worried.''
