Cycling: Bradley Wiggins will reunite with Mark Cavendish to race at this year’s Six Day London event in October. Wiggins, who had previously suggested he would retire after this summer’s Olympics in Rio, but has signed up to compete alongside Cavendish in what he calls “the double act everyone wants to see”. The pair teamed up to win Madison gold at the world track championships in March and will be back at the capital’s Lee Valley VeloPark for the first time since that triumph. Wiggins will be aiming for a fifth gold medal and British record eighth podium appearance if selected for Rio.

Rugby Union: Centre Manu Tuilagi has withdrawn from England’s squad for next month’s three-test series in Australia due to a hamstring injury, the Rugby Football Union said. Tuilagi returned to the England side during this year’s Six Nations following a succession of injury and disciplinary problems. He was named on Sunday in coach Eddie Jones’s 32-man squad for the tour Down Under despite picking up an injury playing for Leicester in the Premiership semi-final against Saracens on Saturday. “It’s bad luck for Manu so close to the tour but it provides a great opportunity for someone else,” Jones said in a statement. The 25-year-old has won 26 caps for England since his debut in 2011.

Rugby Union: Argentina will bid to stage the 2027 Rugby World Cup, the government said after President Mauricio Macri held a meeting with new World Rugby vice-chairman and former Pumas captain Agustin Pichot. Argentina, a growing power in the game who have reached the World Cup semi-finals at two of the last three tournaments, will make an official bid in October when organisers visit the South American country. Pichot, who since leading the Pumas to third place at the 2007 World Cup in France has been instrumental in gaining Argentina greater international competition, was elected 12 days ago as number two to new World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont.

Giro d'Italia: Alejandro Valverde kept alive his hopes of winning this year’s Giro d’Italia with victory in the 16th stage yesterday, but race leader Steven Kruijswijk maintained a firm grip on the pink jersey by finishing second. Former champion Vincenzo Nibali cracked towards the end of the stage and his chances of winning for a second time after his 2013 triumph were seriously dented. Kruijswijk (Lotto NL-Jumbo) now leads Colombian Esteban Chaves (Orica-Green EDGE) by three minutes while Valverde lies third, 3:23 off the pace after collecting a 10-second bonus for his win.
