The Labour Party was giving votes to people not entitled to them to make up for those it was losing, PN deputy leader Beppe Fenech Adami said this morning.

Addressing a news conference, Dr Fenech Adami said the Prime Minsiter had not yet said anything about claims that individuals buying Maltese citizenship were being given a vote, in breach of the Constitution.

These people "mysteriously and abusively" found themselves in the electoral register. "We now have faceless voters," he said.

The Nationalist Party is arguing there are 91 cases from a sample of 100 who should not have been given the right to vote.

These people were not entitled to a vote because they had not been living in Malta for six months. Others had not signed the application for a vote and others were not entitled to vote because of mistakes in their applications, such as ticking all boxes.

He said Dr Muscat’s silence meant that the Prime Minister was not ready to see that the Constitution and the law were respected. This was yet another proof of the total collapse of authority in Malta.

PN's electoral office director Matthew Mangion said the PN had requested a meeting with the Commission.

Dr Fenech Adami said that this scandal had angered people. It was clear that the Labour government was mired in corruption and it was trying to make up for lost votes by giving the right to vote to people who were not.

The case, Dr Fenech Adami said, was more grievous because it was taking place under the Electoral Commission’s eyes. Instead of seeing that the Constitution was respected, the Commission was permitting its breach, he said.
