As an organisation promoting love and responsible parenthood in marriage in Malta for over 50 years, Cana would like to comment on the recent programme Insiders with the title ‘To ban or not to ban abortion’, aired on Euronews recently.

The portrayal of the consequences of a total abortion ban in Poland were presented in apocalyptic terms with a warning that Poland would end up like Malta, which is the only remaining EU country that legislates against abortion.

The least one would expect from professional journalism is fairness about the facts. It was implied that Maltese women facing a difficult pregnancy would be denied treatment because of the danger and possible death of their foetus. This is blatantly untrue. In such extremely rare cases, decisions are made by the family on whether to proceed with treatment or not.

The possibility of losing a child in pregnancy due to life-saving treatment for the mother is therefore just an underhand ploy used dishonestly by those who want to promote abortion.

Malta is rightly proud that it cherishes, protects and defends life, even of those who are weak and medically compromised. The fact that many EU countries encourage the abortion of foetuses they consider inferior because of birth defects is reprehensible and beneath contempt.

Also, using rape as a justification of abortion is another morally flawed argument.

How can a traumatic and criminal action such as rape be addressed by the cruel elimination of an innocent and defenceless person?

The absence of logic is further promoted by presenting a person who shamelessly recommends abortifacient pills for women facing the possibility of a pregnancy.

Now, it is no longer a question of rape, incest, a mother’s life endangered or the risk of a defective baby.

Now, it is just the demand for the availability of drugs that abort an embryo.

One decries the fact that EU taxpayer money is used to fund such an insidious and disgraceful programme that peddles the culture of irresponsibility and death.
