Din l-Art Ħelwa will tomorrow be holding two guided tours at the oldest standing coastal watchtower in Malta.

Built in 1610 by Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt, the tower was erected to guard the coastline and St Paul’s Bay against pirate and corsair attacks.

The tower curator, Martin Vella, and volunteers of the national trust will escort participants round the tower.

The history of the tower, its restoration and the network of fortifications built by the Knights of Malta soon after the 1565 Ottoman Great Siege on Malta will be explained.

The tours will be held from 11.30am to 1pm and from 2.30 to 4pm.

Entrance is against a donation of €2 which will assist with the upkeep of the tower.

Bookings may be made by calling Rosanne Zerafa on 2122 5952 between 9am and 4pm.

This initiative by Din l-Art Ħelwa is undertaken with the Celebrate Islands movement by the Conservatoire du Littoral and the International National Trusts Organisation to raise heritage awareness in the Mediterranean islands.
