It’s like one of those movies: you think that the hero is, sadly, gone for good, but then he returns from the dead, seemingly fit and unharmed.

Some 18 months ago, it looked like we had seen the end of Nokia, with Microsoft selling the brand for just $350m. The buyer was HMD, a new company formed by former Nokia employees in Finland. The manufacturing, distribution and sales arms of Nokia, on the other hand, were bought by iPhone manufacturer Foxconn.

Now, however, HMD says that it intends to start development of Nokia-branded smartphones and tablets which run on Android.

The chief executive of HMD global, Arto Nummela, says that when it comes to branding, Nokia has one key differentiator: nostalgia. For those who grew up with the Finnish brand and whose first phone was a Nokia, the return of the brand will surely be a welcome call.
