A fruit and vegetable vendor who allegedly blew the cover of a number of plainclothes police officers during a drug operation in Paceville while he was drunk, was this afternoon granted bail by a court after denying all charges.

The incident happened yesterday, when the accused, Robert Xuereb, 33, from Iklin, allegedly foiled the police operation when he started screaming “There are f***ing police officers”.

Police inspector Gabriel Micallef told the court that subsequently the man assaulted and reviled a number of officers and refused to give his particulars. Mr Xuereb was also accused of using obscene words in public and of having an incorrect address on his identity card.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli granted bail to the defendant against a deposit of €500 and a personal guarantee of €1,500. He must also report at the Birkirkara police station twice a week.

Lawyer Leslie Cuschieri was legal counsel.
