Sliema is a parking nightmare that could only get worse once more mega projects are approved. The problem could easily be solved should any of our entrepreneurs take up this solution as a commercial enterprise or if the government takes the bull by its horns.
The topography of the area between Għar id-Dud and Independence Gardens lends itself perfectly for a multi storey car park and extensive car-free areas. The difference in level between the existing road surface and sea level can easily accommodate two levels of parking and an underground road that could handle normal traffic.
One might call it madness to dig up the recently refurbished promenade but what if the whole area was pedestrianised and parking problems massively reduced? For a small parking fee the project expenditure would be recuperated over a few years, especially if Sliema developers were made to contribute towards this solution.
