Throughout the centuries, in all societies, the family unit has been regarded with the utmost importance since the procreation of children guaranteed the continuation and stability of the human race.

It is interesting to note that even in pagan Rome, the Emperor Augustus constantly urged young men to marry and form a family. With the passing of time the love and unity of the spouses came to be given as much importance as that of generating children.

However, during the last few years there are those who have decreed that this is not so and that our forefathers got it all wrong. They are striving to give the status of ‘marriage’ to a union of people of the same sex. In doing so they have rejected that principle, which especially during the last couple of centuries, has been a source of pride for many – rationality.

The possibility of procreating children, so essential for the survival of mankind, is absent in each and every act between same-sex couples. It can never be emphasised enough that no two men or two women can ever generate a child between them. The reason for this is that sexual complementarity is absent in a same-sex couple and therefore calling ‘marriage’ what can never remotely resemble the real thing is irrational and ludicrous.

It is the fact that the body of a man and that of a woman are made the way they are that makes their sexual relationship unique and inimitable and is entirely different from that between people of the same sex.

Man’s anatomy and that of a woman have been created differently from each other to foster love, which sometimes can lead to the generation of another human being. On what basis can law-makers give the status of ‘marriage’ to something which manifestly has nothing to do with that wonderful institution which is marriage?

The Christian then holds firmly to his heart Christ’s sublime words regarding marriage: “Have you not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, and said ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one. So they are no longer two but one’.”
