The Addolorata Cemetery, completed in 1869, has been neglected, allowed to fall into a seriously bad state of disrepair and is in an urgent need of restoration.

The 19th century neo-Gothic cemetery designed by Maltese architect Emmanuel Luigi Galizia (1830-1906) has to be one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world and should be considered one of Malta’s most valuable cultural and historical treasures.

The entrance gateway to the cemetery along with two matching neo-Gothic buildings are in an especially bad condition, with most of the stonework and balustrade crumbling; many finials and pinnacles have broken away, fallen off and probably lost.

The bad state of the cemetery is an embarrassment to the whole Maltese nation. Its restoration should be a major project in Malta. Whoever is responsible (the government or the Church, or both), please take note, start restoration works and save the world’s finest Gothic cemetery.
