At a young age I started studying the accordion under maestro Carmelo Abela. During my studies, I also had the opportunity to meet maestro Charles Camilleri. At that time I was also a member of the Malta Accordion Association and passed the first set of exams of the BCA (British College of Accordionists). Unfortunately, due to a lack of funds, I had to stop learning the accordion in the 1960s.

I am still fond of listening to accordionists and one day I was walking in Republic Street, Valletta where I met a number of accordionists who were performing. I immediately took the opportunity to show my appreciation for their music and we started a conversation on how we can promote the instrument in Malta. My idea is to organise an Accordion Biennale Festival where all accordionists would be given the possibility to perform and share their music with the audience.

I have spoken to various local accordionists about my proposal and they are all very interested in this idea. However, organising such an event requires logistical support. To this end, I would like to find some experienced Maltese organisers who could help out.

I am suggesting that the event be called ‘Malta 2017 Biennale Accordion Festival’ and could take place next year during the Easter period. Anyone wanting more information or who may be interested in either giving a helping hand or taking part in the festival may write to me at PO Box 16, Msida.
