Wednesday, June 1: Valleys and Ridges (Scenic, historical, geological).

The walk starts from Mtarfa and proceeds down to Chadwick Lakes and from there through a rural landscape along the Victoria Lines to Nadur Tower. Then this circular tour leads to Għemmieri and Fiddien. The trail passes through some beautiful valleys, and at Binġemma Gap trekkers explore the surrounding area dominated by the remote wayside chapel of Il-Madonna tat-Triq, built by Baron Stanislaw Xara in 1673.

Sunday, June 5: Għajn Tuffieħa/Ġnejna (Scenic).

An early morning scenic walk over rough, slippery and uneven terrain, including some scrambling, possibly followed by a cool swim.

Time: 7.30am.

Duration: 4 hours.

Rating: Hard (rough ground/steep clay slopes/a good head for heights/non-slip shoes).

Meeting place: Għajn Tuffieħa near the parking area next to the former Riviera Hotel.

Tuesday, June 7 (Public holiday Walk for a purpose – Clean-up morning.

The idea is to render back a good deed to the countryside and coastal zones for the great pleasure ramblers derive from their ramblings and for its benevolence. After a short walk of scenic marvel, a cleaning up job will be performed at a country lane as well as an area earmarked for a future ramble. This clean-up campaign will be our final gesture before we close the Spring Walks season. All ramblers are urged to participate as an act of thanks and appreciation towards ‘this fair land’. Members who have work gloves are requested to bring them. There will surely be something to do for everyone, young and not-so-young.

Saturday, June 11: The village of Naxxar (Cultural).

The walk will be led by a historian from the locality. After a visit to the parish church and its museum (containing some medieval paintings) ramblers will stroll along the quaint narrow streets of the old part of the village, which boast of two imposing palazzos, notable town houses, two towers (both national monuments) fortifications, wayside chapels, archaeological remains, a modern church with an artistic Via Sacra, and the Victoria Lines.

Duration: 3.5 hours.

Rating: Easy.

Wednesday, June 15: North West Mellieħa (Scenic/Historical/ Geological)

This circular walk takes in rocky coastlines, valleys, farmland and woods as the trail leads to Għadira Bay. Ramblers take to the Roman road beneath the Red Tower to Popeye Village and then on to il-Majjistral Park, replete with strange girnas (corbelled huts), Manikata and Bajda Ridge, past Punic tombs, a tower and a parish church that blends with its rural surroundings.

Time: 4pm.

Duration: 3.5 hours.

Rating: Moderate with some inclines on rough terrain.

Meeting place: Parish church Mellieħa

Sunday, June 19: Mystery walk (Cultural/Scenic).

This walk will take ramblers to pla­ces rarely visited.

Time: 9am.

Duration: 3.5 hours.

Rating: Easy to moderate.

Meeting place: Dominican church, Rabat (near Villa Messina).

Wednesday, June 29: Mosta/Rabat/Mġarr/Mosta (Scenic, Historical, Geological)

This circular walk takes ramblers to Mosta and its outskirts, including Chadwick Lakes Valley (Wied il-Qlejja) up to the Dwejra Lines, Wied ta’ l-Isperanza and back to Mosta. The walk is characterised by beautiful panoramic views and interesting historical wayside chapels.

Time: 4pm.

Duration: 3.5 hours.

Rating: Moderate with some inclines on uneven terrain.

Meeting place: Mosta parish church.

Wednesday, July 13: Madliena/ Għargħur/Magħtab/Pembroke (Scenic, Historical, Geological)

A circular tour of the British garrison of Pembroke up to Madliena chapel (rebuilt in 1880) and fort (built 1878). The trail leads up at Għargħur, visiting various sites, including chapel of the Assumption, the former Governor’s house and the snaking Victoria Lines, down to Magħtab (San Brincau Cave), Madliena Tower and Rifle Ranges.

Time: 4pm.

Duration: 3.5 hours.

Rating: Moderate with some inclines and rough terrain.

Meeting place: Fort Pembroke (Main entrance).

Wednesday, July 27: Rabat/Mtaħleb/Santa Caterina (Scenic, Historical, Geological).

From the Roman Domus the trail follows winding treks to the remote hamlet of Mtaħleb with a stop at the wayside chapel of the Nativity to enjoy breathtaking views of the surroundings. On the way back ramblers will pass by ancient quarries, cart ruts and Punic tombs until they reach the small hamlet of Santa Caterina, overlooking fertile Wied Liemu.

This circular walk closes the 2015-16 walks, which will re-start in October. As usual, there will be the occasional summer evening walks for which all members will be informed.

Precautions and responsibilities

• Non-members of the Ramblers Association of Malta are advised to contact any of the following ramblers to confirm the walk of their choice as some changes may occur: Lino Bugeja 2163 3126; Alex Vella 2131 3926 or Sam Grech 2733 2433.

• The walks mainly follow a circular route and are open to all members unless otherwise stated.

• Rambling promotes a healthy lifestyle and a feeling of wellbeing while enjoying the beauty of the Maltese countryside and coastal zones. The walks are graded to suit everybody, but some walks might present problems to new ramblers not accustomed to rough terrain and steep inclines. Good walking boots, sun protection and suitable clothing according to the weather are recommended.

• The association takes great care in picking the trails but safety is ultimately the responsibility of participants themselves, who may stop walking at any stage they deem fit, especially on the occasional long treks.

• Notwithstanding precautions relating to boots, clothing, sun cover, state of health and grading, the association declines responsibility for any personal injury or loss of belongings of participants.

• The association seeks to adhere to the walks programme but re­serves the right to make changes when necessary without notice.

• The walks are held for members but guests are welcome to try a walk for free and are later encouraged to become members. The membership fee is €10 annually.
