‘Change and transformation in the knowledge production paradigms: a global perspective’ is the title of a public lecture to be held on Friday at 5.15pm at the KSU-Tipico Careers Common Room at the University of Malta’s Msida campus. It is organised by the editorial board of the university’s Malta Review of Educational Research in collaboration with the Critical Institute, and will be chaired by Prof. Carmel Borg.

The guest speaker is Prof. Catherine Odora Hoppers from the University of South Africa. Prof. Hoppers is a scholar and policy specialist on international development, education, north-south questions, disarmament, peace and human security.

During the lecture Prof. Odora Hoppers will argue that there are many things that education and development in Africa are supposed to be about, but which they still are not. Commenting ahead of the lecture she said: “When it has engaged with ‘development’, education either encourages blind assimilation into it or it proposes positive responses to the effects of development, such as over-consumption and environmental pollution; or it selectively focuses on particular aspects of development such as economic development while underplaying or totally ignoring cultural and intercultural education.”

She added that new parameters for thought and action need to be devised to promote holistic development, in particular in the higher education landscape.
