Three tasty Belgian beers straight from the heart of Brussels are joining Malta's growing list of craft brews.

And as summer approaches and people start reaching into the fridge for some cool refreshment, these newcomers might just tempt you to try something a little more exotic than the usual suspects.

Taras Boulba is an easy drinking 4.5 per cent alcohol content light blonde that's perfect for those hot summer days, with aromatic hops giving it a scent that's reminiscent of citrus. Stouterik is a 4.5 per cent Belgian stout in the Irish style, while Brusseleir is a powerful black IPA, distinguished by its rich malt character and light chocolate notes. It has an alcohol content of 8 per cent and packs a punch!

All three beers are brewed at the renowned Brasserie de la Senne micro-brewery in Brussels and are imported to Malta by BrewHaus.

Craft beers are made in small quantities by independent brewers using traditional brewing methods. Unlike most commercial beers, craft beers contain no artificial additives or flavours, and many are made using just four ingredients: water, malt, hops and yeast.

Although relatively new to Malta, craft beer is nowadays an established part of western beer markets. While it only accounted for 0.4 per cent of all US beer sales in 1987, that figure is now closer to 10 per cent.
