Minister Konrad Mizzi’s financial advisers sent a “source of funds” declaration to Mossack Fonseca stating that the funds going into his New Zealand trust generated from the underlying Panama company would come from “personal businesses”.

Dr Mizzi disputed this in a statement today in which he said the information in question “is clearly an extract from a biography and a past work resume”.

Leaked e-mails from the Panama Papers show the source of funds declaration was sent to Mossack Fonseca in New Zealand after the trustees flagged the potential corruption risk given Dr Mizzi’s status as a politically exposed person.

The trustees were seeking reassurance that the funds going into the trust were earned before Dr Mizzi became a minister.

The source of funds declaration, dated November 16, 2015, says Dr Mizzi set up a practice and developed major accounts with “personal revenue amounting to GBP 5m[llion] (€6.4 million).

The Panama Papers were made available to Times of Malta through an investigative partnership with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung.
