Customs officials have confiscated €10,000 from an Egyptian man who was about to leave Malta carrying  €20,000 in undeclared cash.

The Customs Department said the case happened on  Tuesday at Malta International Airport.

Whilst monitoring passengers in the departures lounge for any illegal export of money, the officials found the man carrying over €20,000 of undeclared cash in a small pouch. He had been obliged by law to make a declaration to  Customs when carrying more than €10,000.

After concluding a search on the passenger and all of his belongings, the officials returned €10,000 to the passenger, being the amount allowed by law, and confiscated the remaining amount.

The Economic Crimes Police were alerted and the man was arrested.
