Benfica: Benfica pipped rivals Sporting Lisbon to win a record 35th Portuguese championship after thumping Nacional 4-1 at home on the final day of the Primeira League yesterday. Benfica headed into the final day two points clear of second-placed Sporting, but needed a win to guarantee the title due to an inferior head-to-head record against their rivals.

Besiktas: Besiktas claimed their first Turkish league title for seven years and their 14th ever yesterday with a comfortable 3-1 win over Osmanlispor. Besiktas fans sang victory songs and set off flares and fireworks after the game, waving flags in the club’s black-and-white colours from car windows as they drove through the streets of Istanbul, honking car horns.

Zenit SP: Russian Premier League champions Zenit St Petersburg will not retain their title this season after they drew 1-1 with Lokomotiv Moscow yesterday. Zenit have 56 points, three behind CSKA Moscow who play Krasnodar today. Even if the St Petersburg side finish on the same number of points as CSKA, they will not overtake the Moscow side because CSKA have won more games.

Euro play-off: Heracles and Utrecht will play off for a place in next season’s Europa League after both emerged victorious yesterday from the second legs of their Dutch league play-off semi-finals. Heracles staged a sensational comeback to eliminate Groningen 6-3 on aggregate, salvaging their tie with a last-gasp equaliser and then romping home in extra time. Utrecht had a 5-2 victory at home to PEC Zwolle after holding them goalless away in the first leg.
