San Andrea Senior School recently held an Open Day to give parents and guests a chance to savour the school’s everyday activities and visit classes to get a glimpse of the learning environment.

Visitors were able to participate in art workshops, sports fitness tests performed by PE option students, treasure hunts and maths olympiads.

The Modern Languages Department presented an activity entitled ‘Buon appetito, bon appetit, buen apetito’ where visitors were presented samples of literature in Italian, French and Spanish together with typical dishes from the three respective countries prepared by the students as well as by Italian students who are part of the school’s Bilingual Italian programme.

Visitors to the library were entertained to a book buffet, an activity designed to expose students to different genres of literature and instil in them a love for reading.

The English Department presented a literary appreciation experience where students read prose, recited poetry, performed extracts from a Shakespearean play and delivered presentations about various novels.

Former students now studying medicine at the University of Mata held workshops centred on health including messages on themes such as bullying, healthy eating and the negative effects of smoking tobacco.

A science matinee presented several hands-on activities and practical work that students carry out during their lessons.

Science students had the opportunity to showcase their experiments and explain how they proved their hypothesis as part of the yearly Stephen Hawking Science and Technology Competition.

The IT Department invited visitors to use students’ computer programmes and see their robotics projects.

IT students demonstrated 3D printing techniques while those of hospitality and home economics baked muffins and savouries for visitors to sample.

On the Energy Terrace visitors saw projects about renewable sources of energy built by students at the school and various plants being grown in the greenhouse.

Visitors were also able to watch students taking part in drama rehearsals for the school’s annual production. They could watch or take part in various sports activities taking place in the outdoor pitch or in indoor tournaments in the games’ room.

Among those attending the activity was the Prime Minister’s wife Michelle Muscat, MP David Agius, MEP and Shadow Education Minister Therese Comodini Cachia, Italian Ambassador Giovanni Umberto De Vito and poet Maria Grech Ganado.
