Castille Square has been transformed into a campsite as activists take their protest against environmental degradation to the Prime Minister’s doorstep.

Some 20 tents were erected this morning as part of a protest called Kamp Emerġenza Ambjent organised by activist group Graffitti.

Activists are calling on politicians to stop compromising the country’s future and well-being.

“We will stay here until we feel that our message has been heard and understood,” the activists said.

They called on the government to scrap plans for the private university campus on land outside the development zone at Żonqor Point, refrain from building a fuel depot in Ħas-Saptan, withdraw a legal notice that regularises illegal constructions and abandon the initiative for a race track on Outside Development Zone land.

The activists invited all Maltese who had the environment at heart and wanted the degradation to stop, to join them at the campsite. But politicians were urged to stay away.

“We want this to remain a free space where people of all political creeds can feel comfortable to join and we cannot have politicians who we feel are responsible for the degradation to come here,” Andre Callus said, adding politicians had other forums where they could make their voice heard.
