Illegal billboards along the Mrieħel bypass and Triq Aldo Moro in Marsa started being removed by the Planning Authority last night.

In a statement, it said it was removing illegal billboards that were not dismantled by their owners by the May 5 deadline.

It started with the Mrieħel bypass and Triq Aldo Moro, from where it removed 12 billboards. Another 19 were eventually dismantled by the offenders.

The cost for the removal, the authority said, would be borne by the respective suppliers.

Officers from the authority's Enforcement Directorate coordinated the operation with the assistance of officers from Transport Malta's Enforcement Unit and the Administrative Law Enforcement.

The operation was carried out at night time so as to cause the least disruption possible.

The new Billboards and Advertisements Regulations, came into effect last month. In April, the authority issued enforcement notices against more than 250 illegal billboards. More than 100 were removed by their owners.

The authority said it will continue to remove the remaining illegal billboards in the coming days.
