I read the article ‘Green fingers in the buff for Naked Gardening Day’ (May 9).

Last Saturday was billed as World Naked Gardening Day.

I am a modest person, not to mention not having a fabulous physique, and did not participate in the event.

Though I like gardening, I am normally a reserved person and a Roman Catholic who keeps my clothing ‘on’ when outside – at least outdoor working man’s shorts.

However, I think Europeans have a more relaxed view of nudism and nudist resorts are commonplace in various parts of the Mediterranean.

I almost think a Nude Gardening Day in Malta should be held monthly in summer.

It would undoubtedly generate added tourism revenue and expose (bad pun) more people to the joys of pruning bushes, growing tomatoes and other forms of gardening.

When I was growing up in Kansas, in the centre of the US, I enjoyed gardening; albeit clothed.  Yet, a nice suntan was refreshing to the body and good for the soul.

It was enjoyable to plow, experience planting seeds and rejoicing at a bountiful harvest.

The summers of Malta are generally perfect and I think it would be great if the island had such a day in secluded, discreet areas and dub it Monthly Nude Gardening day in Malta.

As  the article mentioned above stated, “gardening is second only to swimming that people are most likely to consider doing nude”, aside from procreation, I assume. Such places are common in Spain, the southern part of France (French Riviera), Italy, and elsewhere.

It is more than just the free-spirited people who would benefit: Maltese tourism would benefit if the event is organised in a format not catering to the lewd but rather to the nature lovers who would undoubtedly find such an outlet somewhere in the world.

Malta might as well benefit too, if done in a controlled atmosphere with rules and some guidelines that must be adhered to.
