A solidarity walk in support of the children’s right to education in developing countries across the world is being held on Sunday.

The walk is being organised by Fondazzjoni U (Xandir Soċjo-Reliġjuż) and is pegged to the Maratona Missjoni being held on June 3-5, which will be broadcast on all national TV stations.

The five-kilometre walk leaves from Spinola Bay at 9am to finish at the Gżira Marina. At the end of the walk all participants will receive a certificate.

At 9.30am, a solidarity run of 8km will be leaving from outside St Catherine’s High School in Pembroke, joining the walk at the Gżira front. At the end of the run all participants will receive a medal.

In 2012, approximately 90 per cent of school children across the globe were enrolled in primary school. But despite the progress - the figure stood at around 80 per cent in 2000 - one in every four children drops out before completing their primary education, and an estimated 126 million children worldwide still cannot read or write.

• Tickets to take part may be obtained from www.walkathon.org.mt.
