A parking attendant with a track record of harassing drivers is being investigated by the transport authority yet again.

The parking attendant allegedly erected signs at the entrance to the Floriana car park promoting car wash services. A Transport Malta spokesman confirmed that this was not authorised by the authority, as no parker had any permission to advertise or wash cars in public parking lots.

“Washing cars on public roads is illegal and should be reported to the police. Public car parks are part of public roads,” the spokesman said, adding that the authority’s enforcement department was investigating the matter and would take “any administrative action required with respect to the attendant”.

The authority is responsible for regulating car park attendants and carries out regular checks to ensure parkers abide by the regulations in place.

This is the second time in the past few months that the parker in question has come under fire for abusing the system. Earlier this year, this newspaper reported that a driver had been harassed at the Floriana car park after refusing to pay, despite Transport Malta signs which indicated that payment was optional.

Asked whether any further action would be taken against the man in light of the recent reports, the spokesman said one parker in the area had been fined a number of times and even had his licence temporarily suspended on a number of occasions.

Transport Malta has said on multiple occasions that it regularly received complaints about abusive parkers and now had one investigator monitoring parkers on a daily basis.

In recent months, the transport watchdog’s enforcement directorate fined and suspended a number of parking attendants who had failed to comply with the authority’s regulations, as part of effort to cut down on abuses.

The spokesman encouraged those who come across any form of abuse at car parks to contact Transport Malta on freephone 8007 2393.
