The massive contribution of Campus FM, the Malta University Radio, to the promotion of our national heritage and the appreciation of the arts is definitely not sufficiently acknowledged.

Their link with the BBC has given an outstanding boost to the English language with its transmissions of news, international issues, Hard Talk and debates.

Its association with Classic FM has filled a cultural gap with three hours a day of classical music.

The locally-produced programmes from Campus FM bear the mark of erudition and in-depth research of considerable knowledge and presentation.

The current spring programme is no exception, characterised by special programmes that cover the local artistic and architectural scenes and others that keep us in touch with outstanding world events.

I was particularly fascinated and absorbed by the series of programmes on the history of Maltese architecture from the neolithic period to the present architectural milieu entitled Ġebla Fuq Ġebla (Stone on Stone) by the erudite Conrad Thake in conjunction with one of the Campus FM’s stalwarts, Joseph Pirotta.

Another outstanding production is the highly-researched presentation of Il-Politika fil-films (Politics in films) in which a world political event is brilliantly exposed on film like the Algerian civil war in Des Dieux et des hommes (Of Gods and Men), an unusual presentation of the event. The artistic merits of the Italian Roberto Benigni were discussed in the more recent film of La Vita e Bella (Life is Beautiful).

These are only a few of the locally-produced programmmes on Campus FM.

This unassuming radio station, directed by Fr Joe Borg and a very small staff, deserves the heartfelt thanks of the whole nation.
