Prof. Agatino Rizzo from Luleå University of Technology, Sweden, was recently in Malta to interview institutional stakeholders to explore the government’s ambitions in the implementation of renewable energy projects in Malta.

Prof. Rizzo’s visit forms part of a Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) study of the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (Mcast)’s Institute of Engineering and Transport, and was funded by the Cost Action TU1401 Renewable Energy and Landscape Quality (Rely) project.

Malta presents an interesting case study because while its target is to generate the 10 per cent of its energy from the renewable sources by 2020, it is also a popular tourist destination and hosts Unesco World Heritage Sites.

The study’s hypothesis is that a number of criteria need to be addressed regarding the encroachment of renewable energy projects with the urban and rural landscape, such as potential conflicts between the landscape and such projects.

The study seeks to provide better knowledge with which to manage conflicts in a tourism-driven economy such as Malta.

This STSM programme is supported by Mcast senior lecturer and Vocational Institute coordinator Dr Brian Azzopardi, who is also Malta’s management committee member on Rely.
