The Syrian community in Malta held a silent protest in front of the law courts today to show support for relatives stuck in war-torn Syria and let them know they were not forgotten.

Several Syrians had tried to escape, paid lawyers and sought asylum but for most it was impossible to even make it out of their own city, concerned relatives said this morning.

Holding photos showing the devastation in Syria and banners reading 'Aleppo is burning' and 'saveAleppo', they appealed to the Maltese authorities to show support through discussions with the UN.

The protest, a spokesman said, was being held today since Aleppo had been under fire for at least two weeks with even children and doctors now being targeted.

“We express our solidarity with the people of Aleppo, who, for two weeks, have been victims of war crimes in which children, women and men of all ages were mercilessly killed.”

According to the Syrian Centre for Policy Research almost 500,000 have been killed in Syria since the start of the bloody conflict in 2011.
