I remember Lawrence Gonzi being quoted as telling a former UA ambassador he had had a very limited choice when it came to choosing his Cabinet members.

I believe Simon Busuttil is in a worse position. A member of his present ‘shadow Cabinet’, Marthese Portelli, will remain known for her “the price of pasta will increase at Marsascala if the AUM project goes ahead at Żonqor”.

Just a few days ago, another ‘shadow Cabinet’ member, Claudette Buttigieg, decided to compete for the most ludicrous statement said by any present member of Parliament. She solemnly said that “the Maltese people are getting sick more often under the Labour government”.

But the problem for the PN is getting much more serious because even the leader of the Opposition is competing for the title.

Let us for the moment forget his “even at the grocery shop you may find tins of peas being out of stock”. When questioned by a journalist why he had not taken any action on Mario de Marco’s construction works case, Busuttil replied that if de Marco were to resign even Ian Borg, who had used the same construction company as de Marco, should also go.

Busuttil knows that Borg had laid on the Table of the House all the documents relating to the works and payments made to that construction company promptly and not years later. He should also know that possibly hundreds have used the same construction company.

As more foreign investment is announced, as the jobless figures continue to tumble, as the economy keeps increasing by leaps and bounds, as tourism figures continue to defy all expectations etc., Busuttil keeps getting hotter and hotter under the collar.

This is perhaps the sole reason that can explain his penchant for making such ludicrous political statements.
