The Strada Stretta Concept, in collaboration with Valletta 2018 Foundation and the Department of History of Art at the University of Malta, is launching Migratio: Mdina – Valletta, a site-specific project by Italian artist Illaria Cuccagna under the artistic direction of Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci, near Splendid in Strait Street, Valletta tomorrow at 8pm.

Cuccagna will be creating a piece based on the architecture and politics of Mdina and Valletta. The work will be produced in Mdina and transported to Valletta to establish a link between the two cities.

Free entrance. Refreshments will be available.

Quoting Ilaria Cuccagna:

“I had been walking inside Mdina for the first time, when Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci told me the history of the silent city. I observed the buildings’ walls, the guardian of all these stories.

Dr Schembri Bonaci thought it would be very interesting to create a symbolic connection between Mdina and Valletta, in the light of the tensions that had in the past existed between these two capitals. Therefore, attracted by the textures of the walls, it was decided to realise the silicone rubber mould of the external wall of the Church of St Peter in Chains in Mdina, to then instal it in part by the walls of Strait Street in Valletta.

The idea to ‘take off’ part of the Mdina wall to install it in Valletta would be an invitation to reflect on the historical and cultural conscience of these sites.”
