Bournemouth made a £38.33 million loss as staff wages jumped about 76 per cent to £30.4 million, according to the club’s accounts for the Championship-winning 2014-15 season that saw them promoted to the Premier League.

The club also incurred a multi-million pound penalty for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules during the season, with accounts revealing that the Cherries’ losses for 2015 more than tripled from the £10.3 million figure a year earlier.

Wage costs were more than double Bournemouth’s annual turnover of £12.9 million, while the club spent £4.6 million to prepare their Dean Court Stadium for the Premier League.

Levante relegated

Levante were relegated from La Liga after a six-season stay in the Spanish top flight as two late goals condemned them to a 3-1 defeat at Malaga late Monday.

The Valencia club are bottom of La Liga on 29 points, six points behind Getafe, Sporting Gijon and Rayo Vallecano with two games remaining.

They have collected just six points away from home this season, winning only one game on their travels.

Levante were promoted in 2010, their centenary year, and two years later qualified for European football for the first time.

Paatelainen not quitting Dundee Utd

Mixu Paatelainen has told Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson he would be “a fool” to sack him.

The Finn could not save his side from being relegated as they suffered fresh devastation with a 2-1 derby defeat against Dundee.

Paatelainen knows his position is now in doubt but he insisted he is the man to lead United out of next season’s Championship.

He said: “We have been here a few months now, working with this team and for the club. We’ve got the necessary knowledge of what has to be done.

“We did identify early on the things that needed to be done... the plan is there. Not only player-wise but also off the field, football related. I think only a fool would put that to waste, the knowledge that we have.”

Can is back for ’Pool

Midfielder Emre Can’s return to training this week has handed Liverpool a boost ahead of their crucial Europa League semi-final second leg.

The Germany international was expected to be sidelined for about four weeks after spraining ankle ligaments against Borussia Dortmund on April 14.

However, well ahead of schedule reports said Can rejoined first-team training on Monday – just 18 days after sustaining the injury which resulted in him having to wear a protective boot and use crutches for several days.

Dyche set to spend on new signings

Manager Sean Dyche is willing to loosen the purse strings on Burnley’s return to the Premier League.

The Clarets were the model of parsimony after going up last time but soaring broadcast deals mean the money involved this year has reached a new level, with a minimum income of £100m.

“The money will be massive to the club in terms of what we can build for the future,” he said.

“Eddie Howe has done brilliantly at Bournemouth but they’ve spent something like £42m this year. We spent £10m last time.

“I’m not saying we’ll spend that much but I’ll be speaking to the board and say ‘look... the challenge is enormous, what can we do to have a real go at it’?”

Power of Buddhism drives new champs

English champions Leicester City will have few problems against the giants of European soccer when they contest the Champions League next season, says the Thai monk who has been regularly blessing the newest sensations of world sport.

Buddhist Phra Prommang-kalachan says the team, with their clear minds, will continue to thrive in Europe.

“I believe the power of Buddhism has created teamwork and unity in the team,” Phra said at the Traimitr temple.

“With clear minds, it has brought concentration and determination for them to go to the international arena. At the moment, they will be able to thrive anyway because of their strong minds and they will continue to win on the international stage.”

FIFA extend Sakho’s anti-doping ban

Liverpool and France defender Mamadou Sakho’s 30-day suspension for failing an anti-doping test has been extended worldwide by FIFA.

The 26-year-old was banned for 30 days by UEFA after testing positive for an illegal substance following Liverpool’s Europa League tie against Manchester United on March 17.

The new suspension covered all games, including domestic, international, friendly and official fixtures.

Reports said the centre-back had tested positive for a fat-burning substance.
