Fr Hilary Tagliaferro has been awarded the UEFA Order of Merit for his “crucial contributions” to the development of football.

He was handed the award at a ceremony in Budapest, Hungary marking the 40th Ordinary UEFA Congress. England footballing legends Sir Bobby Charlton and Sir Trevor Brooking were among those awarded.

The UEFA Order of Merit is a mark of honour and distinction awarded by UEFA to individuals within the European football family who demonstrate exceptional performance and dedication for the good of the game.

A statement on UEFA’s website lauded Fr Hilary as a “key coaching figure, youth educator and sports journalist in his native Malta.”

Fr Hilary is well known for his pioneering work in football nurseries as well as his work as a football coach and sports commentator.
