An IKEA chest of drawers could prove fatal if not properly secured to the wall, the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority has warned. 

The MCCAA was moved to issue a consumer warning about the unlikely killer after a boy was crushed by a set of drawers from IKEA's Malm range. Three children have been killed by IKEA furniture in recent times. 

Although there are no known IKEA representatives in Malta, consumers may have bought the set of drawers online or brought them from overseas. 

The MCCAA urged people with any such drawers to ensure they are secured using the included wall restraints. 

A statement issued by the Swedish furniture manufacturer had similar advice. "The best way to prevent tip-over of chests of drawers is to attach products to the wall with the included restraints and hardware per the assembly instructions," the company said. 

Concerns about the safety of some IKEA drawers first surfaced in 2014, when a two-year-old child was crushed to death by a six drawer chest. Another toddler met a similar fate a few months later, prompting the company to launch a free wall-anchoring program for US and UK customers. 

In the latest tragedy, a 22-month-old boy died after tipping a chest of drawers on top of himself in Minnesota, USA.
