An obstacle course race 15km long with "killer hills", rough terrain runs and monkey bars, haystacks and other obstacles is to put Maltese iron men and women to the test.

The Grid is the first race of its kind to ever be held in Malta. It is scheduled to take place on 28 May.

Its organisers said that "Malta offers the ideal terrain and weather for such an event and we have taken advantage of a great scenic route to make the course even more attractive to our participants”.

Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis attended The Grid's official launch. He said that the event would further enhance Malta’s image as a diverse destination and noted that Sports Tourism was growing at a healthy pace. Malta's pleasant climate, he added, made it ideal for sports and outdoor activity holidays.

The Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) has concluded a three year sponsorship agreement with The Grid and will promote the event on social media. The Grid will also be promoted by various sports associations and travel agents, with MTA also inviting specialized bloggers, journalists and TV crews to cover this event internationally.

MTA Chairman Gavin Gulia said that the MTA was determined to turn Malta and Gozo into leading sports tourism destinations in the region.

"We believe that high calibre events, especially those which like The Grid are held on a regular basis can help us achieve this aim,” he said.
