Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said today that he is waiting for a detailed brief on the works currently underway on the new power station before announcing new timelines.

Dr Muscat took the energy portfolio under his wing after last week’s Cabinet reshuffle but still tasked Minister Without Portfolio Konrad Mizzi to see the project through.

Asked about a report in The Sunday Times of Malta that the June deadline for the power station had slipped further as a result of work delays on the ship that will be used as a storage facility for liquefied natural gas, Dr Muscat insisted he was waiting for a briefing on the timelines.

“I cannot confirm the delays on the ship because I am still waiting for an overview… we will be announcing the timeframes in the coming days but what is certain is that the shift to gas will happen,” he said this morning, adding any delays will not be several months long.

He confirmed that tests on the gas conversion of the BWSC plant would be starting soon.
